ABOUT THE ART
Cheriyal paintings are generally considered to be the pictorial presentation of scenes from Indian mythological epics such as Ramayana, Mahabharata, Krishna Leela, and other mythological scripts.
But, Cheriyal paintings also primarily told stories of all 7 castes of the village, the fisherman, washerman, tadi collectors, barbers, weavers and farmers.
ABOUT THE THEME
For the Dhobis or Washermen, Madel Purana was illustrated. It also had instances from Shiva Puran.
One important leaf from the Shiva Puran is the 'Daksha Yajna' where his daughter Sati goes uninvited and sacrifice herself in the Yajna Agni after her father insults Shiva.
Shiva furious takes her body and performs Tandava. To prevent the universe from destruction, Vishnu cuts her body into 51 parts and that's how the 51 Shaktipeeth were established where each body part fell.
Daksha Yajna is an important incident in both Shaktism and Shaivism.
WHAT WE LEARN
During the course of 10 days, we study different elements of Cheriyal paintings while creating a painting depicting the story of DAKSHA YAJNA, as illustrated in the promo.
We importantly also study the techniques and concepts of creating original compositions using these elements. Alongwith, we learn about the history of the art, who practiced it, about the storytelling tradition and storytellers for each caste, from where it has travelled and how has it transformed over the centuries and more.
