ABOUT THE ARTFORM
Bengal Pattachitra is a traditional scroll painting format that narrates stories of epics and legends, woven in beautiful songs, known as 'Pater Gaan'.
Some Patuas settled in Kolkata outside the Kalighat temple for better avenues as it rose to popularity. They cut short the scrolls and started creating single panel artworks which could be produced quickly and sold as souvenirs. This style developed as a new school of art by the name of Kalighat Pattachitra.
WHAT WE LEARN
Chalchitra is a Bengali word where Chal means covering. It is drawn in Pratima Chala. So, it is called Chalchitra. Patua, the artists of Chalchitra called it as Pata Lekha, means the writing of Pattachitra. It is also called Durga Chala, Debi Chala.
In this intensive workshop, we paint a Mahishasurmardini chalchitra understanding the story and its relevance, the tradition and history of Chalchitra and also largely of Bengal Pattachitra as well.
We start from understanding the basics, practicing the faces and figures and gradually step-by-step, we make the artwork learning the authentic way of painting and detailing. You will be supported personally on and off the sessions.
We stress on understanding the concepts so it is easy and quick for you to adapt the style. Also, we lay special attention to know the history of the artform and the people practicing it to create a closer bond with the artform.
