Beiden hebben een goed hart, maar door allerlei omstandigheden, met name Manons hang naar rijkdom en pracht en praal, lukt het ze niet samen een fatsoenlijk leven op te bouwen en leiden ze een losbandig, avontuurlijk bestaan. Dat loopt niet goed af. Het boek dankt zijn kracht aan het wervelende liefdesverhaal, maar vooral ook aan de morele ambiguïteit ervan: moeten we medelijden voelen met de hoofdpersonen, moeten we ze veroordelen, of moeten we gewoon om ze lachen? Prévost neemt geen stelling. Met zijn snelle, ongekunstelde schrijfstijl voert hij ons mee in een emotionele achtbaan zonder weerga, die ons als verdoofd achterlaat.
