Odd to think that peaches have been grown here for so long, but 'Royal George' seems to go back to the time of George III. It's also known as 'Grimwood's Royal George'. A Mr Grimwood, nurseryman of Kensington, grew it from a perfidious French tree, 'Grande Mignonne'. Seized by patriotic fervour or financial genius he renamed it 'Royal George'. "In consequence thereof, such was the high sense of loyalty in the nation, (he) sold so many of the kind, as to profit to the amount of 300 pounds by his misnomer" (Pomona Londinensis, quoted on the website Hortus Camdenensis).
As you might expect, it's pretty hardy, but grow next to a south facing wall or somewhere warm and sheltered. 'Royal George' tastes good and crops heavily.
Peaches are actually very helpful trees for early flying pollinators - to the extent that hard core gardeners pollinate them with brushes as there can be very few bees etc around when they flower. Their blossom is gorgeous.
'Royal George' is self fertile. We supply it on sinister sounding Krymsk 86 rootstock, which will give you a nice sized garden tree up to around 4m.
Supplier : R.V. Roger Ltd
We supply peach trees as bare root, so they are only available between November and April. During lifting season, there will be a delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders taken from June-October will be confirmed in late October/ early November after a nursery stock take, for dispatch from November. Please consult our planting and care guide on receipt of your order.
Your purchase helps us support a range of charities, which are related to the products we sell.
Have a look at our videos on what to do when your plants arrive and how to plant a bare root tree.
