Set in the Reconstruction-era South, the story follows seven-year-old Johnny, who moves with his mother and grandmother to a Georgia plantation after the Civil War, while his father works in Atlanta. There, Johnny meets the warm and wise Uncle Remus, whose storytelling introduces a world of animated adventures featuring the clever Br’er Rabbit, the scheming Br’er Fox, and the blundering Br’er Bear.
Starring Ruth Warrick (All My Children), Bobby Driscoll, and James Baskett in his Academy Honorary Award-winning role as Uncle Remus, the film features the iconic, Oscar-winning song “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” and a series of vignettes drawn from Southern folklore.
NOTE: This Disney film has largely vanished from official circulation due to ongoing criticism over its racially stereotyped portrayals. While Uncle Remus is not depicted as a slave, his characterization aligns with the “Uncle Tom” archetype. As of 2010, Disney CEO Bob Iger described the film as “antiquated” and “fairly offensive.” Nonetheless, it remains a point of fascination and debate—and a sought-after title for serious Disney collectors.
