Stanton helped write the Declaration of Sentiments – a document modeled after the Declaration of Independence – that offered examples of how men oppressed women, such as:

• Compelling women to submit to laws created without their representation
• Subjecting women to a different moral code than men
• Preventing women from owning land or earning wages
• Preventing women from gaining a college education
• Aiming to make women dependent and submissive to men
