Admiralty Chart No. 643, Durban (1944), shows the harbour at the height of its World War II strategic importance, by then fully developed into one of Africa’s busiest and most secure ports. The chart reflects extensive dredging and engineering works that created a deep-water entrance channel and enclosed basins, with quays, wharves, breakwaters, and navigational aids such as lighthouses and beacons clearly marked. By 1944 Durban had grown beyond its colonial commercial role to serve as a major Allied naval base and convoy assembly point in the Indian Ocean, supporting operations from East Africa to Asia. The hydrographic detail—soundings, anchorage notes, and harbour works—illustrates its capacity to accommodate large modern warships and merchant fleets. This edition thus captures both the technical evolution of Durban Harbour and its pivotal role in global wartime logistics.
This map is a reproduction of a historical map that is now in the public domain. It has been selected for its aesthetic appeal and historical interest and carefully restored and reproduced to preserve its original detail and character. There may be marks and fold lines visible which add to the authentic look. The map is printed on 230gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish. Most old maps were printed on uncoated rag or wood pulp papers and therefore a matte finish best represents the original map.
