Desmond's arrest was the product of decades of racial segregation and discrimination in Canada, and it occurred nine years before Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Alabama. In 2010, the Nova Scotia Government recognized this gross miscarriage of justice and posthumously granted Desmond a free pardon, but many Canadians are still unaware of her story or that racial segregation existed throughout many parts of Canada during most of the twentieth century.
