With the global pandemic of coronavirus COVID-19 reshaping our world, what better way to talk about our medical and economic crisis than this cup? It's an emotional topic that's dividing communities and prompting legislation to head off an even more urgent public health crisis. How do we source our information, what is media and health literacy, what is our responsibility as parents and as citizens, what are the health and financial costs of outbreaks, how do mutations occur within a population not fully vaccinated, and what role do trust and civic responsibility play in this issue?

I conceived of this vaccination cup (drawn by Sara Varon) as a way for people to talk about science and what responsibility each of us has within society. My parents were born before many modern vaccines existed and began practicing medicine in the late 1950's/early 60's at a time when the vaccines for polio, measles, tetanus, and pertussis were coming into commercial use. Around the dinner table, I heard stories about a time when being free from these diseases weren't taken for granted and they treated patients which had diseases that are nearly eradicated now (but are on the comeback) I think my Japanese heritage drilled into me the notion of how personal responsibility contributes to the health of the whole community. I get the flu shot every year, not so much to mitigate the effects of the flu, but more importantly, so I don't pass anything on to the most vulnerable members of our community with compromised or developing immune systems. 

Now in this coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, it's more important than ever to wash your hands, practice social distancing, and talk about the importance of vaccines. Please stay safe everyone!!!
