The people who emerged in the colonial era from the wilder corners of Virginia and the Carolinas have long been at the heart of a controversy, now hundreds of years old but no less abated. Many of these groups today assert themselves to be Native American communities, both past and present. Most scattered across the region today are the result of a process across many generations of racial and cultural mixing, and whose histories continue to intrigue the few who investigate them even today. Examinations of their legal and social histories reveal that ,any individuals as well as entire communities have been constantly called to question over there claims of being Native Americans, despite almost three centuries worth of documentation available which does identity many as such.
