The Blackmagic Design Spares - Power Module - 12VDC 225W is a heavy-duty internal power supply unit designed for the most power-intensive hardware in the Blackmagic lineup. Providing a massive 225 watts on a 12V DC rail, this module is engineered for "Enterprise" class devices that feature high-density FPGA processing, extensive 12G-SDI crosspoints, or large arrays of physical controls.

High-Current Performance

With a 225W rating, this module can deliver approximately 18.75 Amps of current. This high capacity is necessary for devices that manage significant heat dissipation and complex mechanical tasks simultaneously.

  • Voltage: 12V DC (Standardized for high-end broadcast logic).

  • Wattage: 225W (High-overhead for mission-critical reliability).

  • Input: Universal AC 100V–240V.

  • Efficiency: Designed for 24/7 "always-on" environments like broadcast master control rooms and live production trucks.

Compatible Hardware

This power module is typically found in Blackmagic's "flagship" 2RU and larger devices, where a 60W or 150W supply simply wouldn't provide enough current:

  • ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K: The massive processing requirements for 80+ inputs and multiple M/E rows require this level of power.

  • Smart Videohub 40x40 (12G-SDI models): Routing forty 12G-SDI signals creates significant thermal and electrical load that requires a high-amperage supply.

  • Teranex AV / Express: Standards converters that perform intense real-time pixel processing and frame rate conversion.

  • Universal Videohub Frames: Used in modular router frames to power multiple I/O cards.

Symptoms of Failure

Because this module handles such high current, failures can be more dramatic than in smaller units.

  • Thermal Shutdown: If the module's internal cooling or capacitors degrade, the unit may shut down under load (e.g., when all 40 SDI ports are active).

  • High-Frequency Whine: A common sign of aging capacitors in a 225W supply, indicating it can no longer provide "clean" DC power.

  • Fan Failure Triggers: In some units, if the power module's voltage rail dips, the system fans may spin at 100% (failsafe mode) or stop entirely, leading to a secondary overheat on the Main PCB.

Key Features

  • Broadcast Grade: Low-ripple DC output to ensure no electrical noise is introduced into the SDI video signals.

  • Active/Passive Hybrid Cooling: Often features its own integrated heat sinks and is positioned near the unit's main fans for maximum longevity.

  • Redundant-Ready: In many 225W devices, these modules are designed to be paired with a second module for power redundancy.

Technical Installation Note

Replacing a 225W power module is a high-level repair that requires strict adherence to safety protocols.

  • Lethal Charge Warning: The large primary capacitors in a 225W supply can store a lethal electrical charge for a significant amount of time. Wait at least 15 minutes after unplugging the AC source before opening the unit.

  • Terminal Integrity: Unlike smaller modules with plastic clips, 225W units often use screw terminals or high-density spade connectors for the 12V output. Ensure these are tightened to the correct torque; a loose connection at 18 Amps can cause electrical arcing and fire.

  • Mounting and EMI: Ensure all mounting screws are used. This module generates a significant electromagnetic field; the metal chassis serves as both a heat sink and an EMI shield.

  • Airflow Check: When replacing the module, inspect the internal chassis fans. A power module failure is often preceded by a fan failure that caused the supply to bake in its own heat.

Are you replacing this in a Videohub 40x40 or an ATEM switcher? Knowing the specific device can help determine if there are additional calibration steps required.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Fun with a late blooming omega
Format: Kindle
I like this book. The story is fun, cute, and sexy. There's just a little drama, some excellent, steamy scenes, and a fairly good relationship building storyline. I especially like how all the main characters are a bit older than the usual 20 somethings I tend to see in this kind of book. Having said that, I wish there were more descriptions of the places, as well as the food in the fancy restaurant. I enjoyed the cocktails at the club, so I missed that kind of detail when Gray took Madison on a dinner date. I also wish there had been more interaction between Lucas and Madison, and Lucas and Rian. It felt a bit lopsided, with a focus on Rian, Madison, and Gray. I wish it had been proofread - there are a lot of typos, but nothing too distracting.
