  • Published twice a year, Notebook magazine provides a curated vision of what makes the art of the cinema exciting and moving. Created, prepared, and published by MUBI, the global distributor and curated film streaming service, it is an editorially independent extension of MUBI’s mission of expanding access to and advocating for the seventh art. With a design-forward approach, featuring renowned international writers and collaborating with filmmakers and artists, the magazine is a showcase for experimental, reflective, and surprising approaches to film culture, engaging with it creatively and through diverse viewpoints and methods. In a cultural landscape of fewer and fewer magazines devoted to film, Notebook boldly encapsulates and embodies the tremendous vitality, relevance, and beauty of the cinema.
  • Issue 4 explores cinematic soundscapes in their diverse sonic forms. Voices of artists are featured in a wide-ranging conversation between director Gus Van Sant (ElephantMilk), composer Tamar-kali Brown (MudboundThe AssistantShirley), and sound designer Leslie Shatz (Bram Stoker’s DraculaCarolBlonde), as well as a survey of contemporary filmmakers, including Garrett Bradley, Erik Matti, and Dominga Sotomayor, explaining their approaches to audio. We look at the state of accessibility for the visually impaired, and what its evolution may bring in the future, and hear about exciting approaches to silent film accompaniment by musician Julia Holter, benshi Ichiro Kataoka, and pianist Gerhard Gruber. Additional topics include tours of the world-class Skywalker Sound facility in Northern California and a Foley effects studio in Ireland. Other features range from a celebration of the gorgeous “100 Films, 100 Posters” art project in Jeonju, South Korea, to a personal reflection on brownface in American cinema, and a new installment by Pedro Costa (Vitalina Varela) in our “Things Filmmakers Should Know” series, and much more.

Beautifully written and unique conversational format
Format: Hardcover
This was a great read—sad, but very well done. I really enjoyed the conversational format, since I’ve never read a book told in quite that way before. It felt fresh and different, and the writing was excellent. Overall, it was a very engaging and memorable book.

What a moving story. I thought I would be bored reading someone’s correspondence, I was not. This is a well written, interesting and moving book. A life in letters. Loved it.
