Description

I HAVE RECEIVED MUCH MORE THAN I HAVE DESERVEDThis book is basically a celebration of life of Archbishop John (Garklavs), a diocesan Orthodox Christian hierarch of Latvia (1943 1944) and the Diocese of Chicago and the Midwest in America (1949 1980). Of special interest is Archbishop Johns connection with the icon of the Theotokos, which was written by Apostle St.

This book is basically a celebration of life of Archbishop John (Garklavs), a diocesan Orthodox Christian hierarch of Latvia (1943-1944) and the Diocese of Chicago and the Midwest in America (1949-1980). It is a valuable source of information for historians and a valuable spiritual aide to all Christians, especially the Orthodox ones. Of special interest is Archbishop JohnÕs connection with the icon of the Theotokos, which was written by Apostle St. Luke, and which the German military took out of Tikvin, Russia as a war trophy during World War II. It influenced Archbishop JohnÕs life during his tenure as a refugee in Germany and in his new home in America. The author of the book, Alexander Gavrilin, is a professor of history at the University of Latvia, whose specialty has been the Orthodox Church in Latvia. Archbishop JohnÕs life may serve as an appropriate example for Orthodox seminarians and clergy, as well as for all Christians.

Excellent Tool for Approaching Homer via English
Format: Hardcover
I love the Loeb editions of Homer. I've already ready the Odyssey, now moving on to the Iliad. What I've especially started to enjoy with this volume of the Iliad is the editors decision to "call out" which lines were rejected by which ancient commentators (Aristarchus, etc.). This adds some fun to the reading because you get to review the line in Greek and try to surmise why they rejected it, or how the passage would work without the line. The translation is reasonably modern but still "lordly" and has the tone of a war epic. It was enjoyable to read aloud in both English and Greek.
