In The Vigil on Earth, the first volume of the Ravensway trilogy, the young Australian Rick Scyld was recruited by the Banksia Witch to help bring about the defeat of the forces of Hrefn, and to restore ascendancy to the forces of LŽoht. Rick underwent a process of initiation and learning as he battled the minions of Hrefn in the Australian landscape. To fulfil the quest, Rick had to journey to the Second Plane, where Hrefn and LŽoht have their abode, and he had to do this via the giant egg of the Bunyip.

Volume two, The Raising of the Shield, takes place in the Second Plane, which is peopled not only by humans but also by Wizards, Witches, Elves, Dwarves, Goblins, Trolls, and Unicorns. The Citadel of the Wizards eventually falls to the forces of Hrefn, and Rick and the Quest Companions begin their journey towards L’fmorth, the mountain on which exists the shifting castle of the gods Hrefn and LŽoht.
