Miles Davis Quintet • Complete Café Bohemia Bandstand U.S.A. 1956-58 Radio Broadcasts • Volume 1 (GBR00124) - 2nd Reprint

LP AUDIOPHILE PRESSING

You hold in your hands the first of three volumes dedicated to the recordings made by Miles Davis, between 1956 and 1958 at the Café Bohemia, located at 15 Barrow Street, in Greenwich Village, New York.

The restaurant (which had an obvious spelling error on its sign – Restraurnt) was managed by Italian-American Jimmy Garofalo and opened in 1955. In a short time, the Café Bohemia became a sort of Mecca for jazz modernists, and several albums were recorded by some of the most interesting artists of the time (Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Kenny Dorham, George Wallington). Furthermore, Oscar Pettiford (who initially served as the artistic director of the Jazz Club) even dedicated a composition to it, titling it "Bohemia After Dark".

The Café Bohemia was also one of the venues from which the program  Bandstand U.S.A. was broadcast on the Mutual Network Radio Broadcasts. Every week, host Guy Wallace, often accompanied by guests, recorded and broadcast incredible live performances directly from the Bohemia. Miles Davis was part of these broadcasts eight times, between September 15, 1956, and May 17, 1958.

Here you will find, for the first time in history, the complete recordings of Miles (approximately 120 minutes), which were broadcast by the Mutual Network at the time.

Part of this material has been released over the years on unofficial records, but most of it appears for the first time on vinyl, if not entirely unreleased. In all cases, the material is published here with the best possible sound quality and correct speed (most previous versions ran at the wrong speed, i.e., out of tune with the original performance key).

This is a true time and space machine, as we have tried to reproduce the sound of that era as faithfully as possible. To improve and philologically respect that world of sound, we have also decided to publish all announcements (by Guy Wallace and his guests) in their complete version.  Some very interesting and unexpected aspects emerge from these announcements, which will help the listener to experience that era to the fullest, both from a social and historical point of view.

So, turn on the radio and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the second half of the 1950s with the previously unreleased music of the Miles Davis Quintet at its best.

Miles Davis (tp); John Coltrane (ts); Red Garland (p); Paul Chambers (b); Philly Joe Jones (d)
Guy Wallace (Radio Broadcast announcer)

Technical note:

Unfortunately, the sole surviving (obviously) mono tape transcriptions of these recordings were not always in good shape, but we improved the quality with state-of-the-art equipment and remastering tools.
To present the complete performances we have used the best available sources, considering that the material was recorded through a period of three years by different technical crews and completely different miking techniques and positioning. This resulted in a slight change in audio quality. This is the best and most complete collection of the legendary Café Bohemia recordings aired by the Mutual Network for Bandstand U.S.A. Radio Broadcast.

Thanks to Piergiorgio Cupellini, Elisa Gabrielli, Paola Giordano, Igor Ebuli Poletti, and Fabio Sala. Special thanks to Bob Belden, Jan Lohmann, Peter Losin, and Teo Macero.

Speed corrected and remastered by Enrico Merlin
Executive producer, Massimo Corvino for Groove Back Records

A true turtleneck that retains a snug high neck.
Color: White, Size: X-Large
I've found this brand to have gotten better over the years as far as offering the American market what it needs in terms of realistic sizing. I only wish they'd realize that there are a lot of us who are long in the back and arms where my only choice is to go a size up and sacrifice a slim fit for sleeves that are long enough plus a back that doesn't go up past my waist just because I reach up for something, that and I like to be warm. So these are such nice quality turtlenecks that it's hard to complain about but maybe the company will read this. The snug neck stays up is plus number one since that's why I'm buying a full neck. They come with very nice weaves in the fabric, good enough for casual or formal wear. Finally the warmth you seek is there but I've worn them in what most would think isn't the right temp for a turtleneck. Also they have them in white! Yes, a lot of others just don't for reasons I can't fathom, and the pic you're seeing is accurate, these will form to your shape without being ridiculously thin material. Several washes later and they are as fine a garment as when I first wore them. I've only found one other brand that compares to these but it's much more expensive, COOFANDY is affordable in these times of expensive everything. Warm but also a lightweight shirt, I've gotten them really dirty with actual dirt and it washes out so well you'd never know it. Don't let my taking off one star stop you, try one yourself and you'll be coming back for more.
