Cartier Baignoire “Paris” GM Ref. 78094 – 18K Yellow Gold (Circa 1970s)

The Cartier Baignoire “Paris” GM stands as one of the purest expressions of Cartier’s mid-century design language—an elegant fusion of French sophistication and minimalism. Crafted in solid 18K yellow gold and featuring the coveted “Paris” signature dial, this 1970s example captures the timeless allure that has defined Cartier’s watchmaking heritage for over a century.

The Case – An Icon of Parisian Elegance

The gently elongated oval case, measuring 22 x 31 mm, embodies the Baignoire’s signature form—named after the French word for “bathtub,” a nod to its gracefully curved silhouette. Executed in 18K yellow gold, the case radiates warmth and refinement, with beautifully proportioned contours that sit effortlessly on the wrist.

This particular example remains in exceptional condition, showing crisp lines and retaining its original geometry. The plexiglass crystal is spotless, completing the watch’s serene, uninterrupted aesthetic.

The iconic blue sapphire cabochon crown—Cartier’s hallmark—adds a flash of color and regality, perfectly balancing the dial’s monochrome grace.

The Dial – The ‘Paris’ Signature

The original white ‘Paris’ dial is nothing short of stunning. Perfectly preserved and free of cracks or blemishes, it features bold black Roman numerals, Cartier’s timeless typographic hallmark, arranged in the distinctive curved style that gives the Baignoire its poetic identity.

The blued steel sword hands sweep elegantly across the pristine dial, harmonizing with the blue sapphire crown to form Cartier’s unmistakable color pairing.

Signed “Cartier Paris”, this dial variation is especially desirable among collectors, representing an era when Cartier still operated from its legendary 13 Rue de la Paix boutique in Paris—a period revered for its exclusivity and craftsmanship.

The Movement – Cartier Calibre 78-1

Inside ticks the Cartier Calibre 78-1, a manually wound mechanical movement known for its reliability and fine finishing. Recently serviced, it runs flawlessly, ensuring the watch performs as beautifully as it looks.
Cartier’s approach to movement design in the 1970s emphasized discretion and precision—allowing the artistry of the case and dial to take center stage while maintaining dependable Swiss mechanics within.

The Strap – Belgian Craftsmanship

Fitted with a hand-made Belgian leather strap in glossy blue, this watch exudes refined contrast and elegance. The strap’s rich tone complements both the dial accents and the blue cabochon crown, completing the aesthetic harmony that defines the Baignoire line.

Historical Note – The Birth of the Baignoire

The Cartier Baignoire traces its origins back to 1912, when Louis Cartier first experimented with the oval form as an alternative to the rigid geometry of early wristwatches. The design evolved through the 1950s and 1960s into the modern Baignoire we recognize today—an elegant symbol of understated luxury worn by icons such as Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau, and Romy Schneider.

By the 1970s, Cartier Paris began producing variations like this Ref. 78094, characterized by hand-finished gold cases and beautifully balanced dials. Each piece was assembled in limited quantities, representing the pinnacle of French watchmaking artistry during that era.

The “Paris” signature itself is now a mark of rarity—reserved for watches retailed through Cartier’s original Rue de la Paix boutique, making surviving examples highly collectible.

Decent Shoes with Misleading Description (Not Leather)
Size: 12 Wide, Color: Black, Size: 12 Wide, Color: Black
I only look for leather when I’m purchasing dress shoes. Under the description “details” on this item it lists the shoe as leather upper and inner lining. A photo shows “genuine Napa leather lining”. If you keep reading (which I have now that I’ve received the shoes) it shows “faux leather” in the small print and that is not “leather”. I run a small leather business and this irks me because it’s clearly false advertising. The details also show the product is made in Brazil but when they arrived today, the shoe tag shows “Made in China” and “Man Made upper and lower”. I don’t hate the shoes. They look nice. What I know is they won’t hold up over time like leather, which is why the description should be accurate and not misleading.
