The Blackmagic Design Spares - ATEM 1 M/E Panel - Control Knob refers to the physical rotary encoder cap and the underlying electronic component found in the "System Control" section of the 1 M/E Broadcast or Advanced Panel.

These knobs (often called "Soft Knobs") are used to navigate menus on the LCD screen, adjust chroma key parameters, and dial in DVE (Digital Video Effects) coordinates. Because they are the most frequently touched parts for fine-tuning, they are prone to mechanical wear and "encoder skip."

Components of the Control Knob

  • The Knob Cap: The physical plastic/rubberized piece you grip. These are friction-fit and can be replaced if the texture has worn off or if the plastic has cracked.

  • The Rotary Encoder: The electronic component soldered to the PCB. Unlike a volume knob (potentiometer), these spin infinitely and send digital "pulses" to the panel's processor.

  • The "Push" Switch: Most ATEM control knobs have a "push-to-enter" function. If you can turn the knob but cannot "click" it to select a menu item, the internal spring mechanism has failed.

When to Replace the Control Knob

  • Value "Jumping": When you turn the knob to the right, the numbers on the screen jump backward or skip large increments. This indicates that the internal optical or mechanical contacts are dirty or worn.

  • Physical Slack: The knob feels "wobbly" or loose on its axis, often caused by the internal shaft bending or the mounting nut loosening inside the chassis.

  • No Response: Turning the knob produces zero change on the LCD screen, though the other knobs in the row work fine.

  • Missing Cap: The plastic cap has fallen off or been lost during transport, leaving only the thin metal "D-shaft" exposed.

Technical Installation Note

Repair Level: 2 (Cap Only) to 4 (Encoder Soldering).

  1. Removing the Cap: If you are only replacing the plastic cap, simply pull it straight up and away from the panel. If it is stubborn, use a piece of string looped under the base to pull evenly. Do not use pliers, as you will gouge the aluminum faceplate.

  2. Accessing the Encoder: To replace the electronic component, you must open the panel and remove the Right Side or System Control PCB.

  3. Soldering Required: The encoder is a through-hole component with 3 to 5 pins (depending on the model). You will need a de-soldering pump or wick to remove the old unit without lifting the copper pads on the PCB.

  4. Shaft Alignment: When installing a new encoder, ensure the "D" flat of the shaft is oriented the same way as the others before re-seating the plastic cap to ensure the indicator line (if present) points the right way.

Diagnostic Tip: The "Skip" Fix

Before ordering a new electronic encoder, try the Cleaning Method:

  1. Remove the plastic knob cap.

  2. Spray a tiny amount of DeoxIT F5 FaderLube or high-grade contact cleaner down the shaft where it enters the housing.

  3. Spin the shaft vigorously for 60 seconds.

  4. In many cases, this clears out the microscopic dust that causes the "skipping" behavior, saving you from a soldering job.

Replacement Types

  • Menu Navigation Knob: The main knob used for scrolling through pages.

  • Parameter Knobs: The smaller row of knobs (usually 3 or 4) located directly under the LCD screen.

Are you looking for just the plastic cap to fix a cosmetic issue, or is the electronic encoder skipping and failing to change settings on the screen?

Excellent Ultrawide Monitor for a MacBook Air Setup
I purchased the LG 34U60ZB-B to use primarily with my MacBook Air, and it has exceeded my expectations. Setup was incredibly simple using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, and the monitor was recognized immediately at its full 3440 x 1440 resolution. The extra screen real estate is a game changer for productivity. I regularly have multiple documents, spreadsheets, browser windows, and email open at the same time, and the 34-inch ultrawide format makes it feel like having two monitors without the distracting bezel in the middle. Everything is sharp, crisp, and easy to read. The picture quality is excellent. Colors look vibrant and accurate, text is clear, and the WQHD resolution provides plenty of workspace without making items too small. I was particularly impressed with how good text rendering looks on macOS, which is important since most of my work involves reading and writing. The monitor feels much larger than a standard 27-inch display while still fitting comfortably on my desk. The curved screen adds to the immersive feel without being overly aggressive. It also works well for streaming videos, casual gaming, and photo viewing when I’m not working. One thing to note is that the monitor does not provide USB-C power delivery, so MacBook users will still need their charger connected separately. That wasn’t a dealbreaker for me given the monitor’s price and performance. Overall, this is an outstanding value. If you’re looking for an affordable ultrawide monitor for a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, the LG 34U60ZB-B delivers excellent image quality, tons of workspace, and a clean, productive setup.

Perfect fit for my 34 inch wide monitor!
This is a really snug fit for my 34 inch wide screen monitor and provides excellent privacy from wider angles so that nobody can get a look at what they're not supposed to see. With confidential projects this is very handy to have when there are visitors around.

Not a great fit for Dell U3419W
I got this for use on one of my Dell U3419W wide screen monitors. The slide-in mount wasn't a good fit for the design of this monitor, as the bezel isn't typical and the illuminated part of the screen is a tiny bit narrower than the filter. I plan to see if I can hack something together that will work with this monitor without sticking stuff to the actual display part of the screen or leaving the filter far enough in places from the screen to make it unreadable. I'm rating it 3 stars instead of 2 because I think I can make it work, but it seems like the attachment methods included are meant for laptops rather than standalone monitors. If I had ordered this outright, I would have returned it.
