Introduction:

Located in Isfahan Province and with only 150 kilometers (90 miles) distance from the city itself (the city of Isfahan is the capital of the province of Isfahan), Nain is yet another major carpet production center in Iran. Nain carpets are made on vertical looms with both the warp and the weft being made of cotton, while the pile being made of wool and silk. Alongside Tabriz, Isfahan, and Qom, Nain is another city in Iran that is well-known for the production of silk-on-silk artworks with a knot density of more than 600,000 knots per square meter. 

Description:

In appearance and quality, Nain pieces are very similar to Isfahan carpets. With respect to structure, however, Nain works have managed to establish their own category. They are subdivided based on the number of La, their warps have. La in Persian/Farsi (the language of Persia/Iran) means layer. In this context, La refers to the number of threads that have been used in every warp of the carpet. This means a Nain with a lower number of La would have a higher knot-density, a higher knot-count and respectively a finer quality. Thus, a Nain's overall quality is directly related to its warp structure. As such, Nain masterpieces are further subdivided into 3 main categories; 4 La Nains, 6 La Nains, and 9 La Nains. 

Nain became a household name in carpet production by the mid 1920s; super fine pieces were created due to the high quality of the workshops in the area. Specifically, Fat'hollah Habibian (1903-1995), ran the biggest, and the most famous workshop in the city. Widely regarded as "The Father of The Nain Carpet," Master Fat'hollah began knotting high-end masterpieces with his brother Master Mohammed since their school days. As a result, Mr. Habibian is responsible for the production of some of the world's most remarkable artworks during the past century.

Price Range and Value:

Nain-made carpets are usually priced as high as their high-end counterparts from Tabriz, Isfahan, and Qom. They are definitely a sound investment as their value always increases over time. Their larger works start from 10' in length, and 6' in width, for the price of $ 10000, and they go all the way to 12' in length, and 8' in width, for the price of $ 20000 and above.
