Onkyo TX-NR5100 7.2-Channel 8K AV Receiver at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The TX-NR5100 is a 7.2-channel 8K AV receiver from Onkyo (Osaka, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Designed as an accessible entry into the TX-NR Series, it is rated at 165 W per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 10% THD, 1-ch driven) and 80 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.08% THD, 2-ch driven, FTC), with a frequency response extending to 100 kHz in Direct and Pure Audio modes. The TX-NR5100 features four HDMI 2.1 inputs all supporting 8K/60 and 4K/120, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding for 5.1.2 immersive layouts, AccuEQ room calibration, and a full wireless streaming suite including AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, DTS Play-Fi, and Works with Sonos, making it an excellent home theater and gaming-ready choice for Toronto and Canada buyers.

Seven-Channel Amplification and Dynamic Audio Performance

The TX-NR5100 delivers seven discrete amplifier channels rated at 165 W into 6 ohms and 80 W into 8 ohms at FTC standard with 0.08% THD across the full audio band. Dynamic power headroom extends to 160 W into 3 ohms and 125 W into 4 ohms for demanding front channel loads. The frequency response in Direct and Pure Audio modes spans 10 Hz to 100 kHz with +1 dB / -3 dB tolerance, preserving the full bandwidth of high-resolution audio sources, and the signal-to-noise ratio measures 106 dB on line inputs. VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuit) suppresses high-frequency pulse noise introduced by digital-to-analogue conversion, maintaining a clean analogue output. The result is a composed, detailed sound that serves both cinematic impact and musical nuance across a broad range of speaker loads from 4 to 16 ohms.

HDMI 2.1, 8K Video, and Gaming Performance

All four of the TX-NR5100's HDMI 2.1 inputs deliver the full bandwidth required for 8K/60 and 4K/120 passthrough with VRR, ALLM, QFT, DSC, QMS, HDCP 2.3, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, and BT.2020 wide colour gamut support. This makes the TX-NR5100 one of the few receivers in its class to offer 8K/60 and 4K/120 capability across every rear input rather than only the first two or three. VRR eliminates frame tearing for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, while ALLM automatically activates the display's game mode for minimum input lag. The eARC-equipped main HDMI output feeds the primary display and carries uncompressed Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio back from the TV to the receiver. Both HDMI outputs carry the same signal in parallel for use with a projector and flat panel simultaneously. SACD playback is also supported via HDMI at 2.8 MHz two-channel and multichannel.

Immersive Surround Sound and AccuEQ Calibration

The TX-NR5100 decodes Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, and DTS-HD Master Audio natively, supporting 5.1.2 speaker layouts that combine five listener-level speakers, one or two subwoofers, and two overhead or height speakers for a full three-dimensional sound field. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer and DTS Virtual:X processing create simulated overhead effects without physical height speakers for standard speaker configurations. Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X upmixing extend any two-channel or multi-channel source into the full surround array. AccuEQ room calibration uses the included measurement microphone to automatically detect speaker presence, calculate distances to the listening position, set appropriate channel levels, and select the correct subwoofer crossover frequency for balanced full-spectrum sound. Game sound optimisation modes for Rock, Sports, Action, and RPG genres are also built in.

Streaming, Smart Home, and Wireless Connectivity

The TX-NR5100 integrates AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, DTS Play-Fi, and Works with Sonos with Volume Pass-Through for wireless multiroom audio. Built-in streaming services include Spotify Connect, Amazon Music HD (via DTS Play-Fi), Tidal Connect, Deezer, TuneIn, and Pandora. Roon Tested certification enables networked hi-res playback from a Roon Core server. Bidirectional Bluetooth 4.2 with Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) covers both incoming streaming via SBC or AAC and wireless headphone output via aptX and aptX HD for 24-bit lossless transmission. Voice control via Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri is supported with a compatible third-party smart speaker or device. Hi-res audio playback from the USB Type-A port or network supports DSD256, DSD128, DSD64, and up to 24-bit/192 kHz FLAC, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF files.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Onkyo TX-NR5100?

The Onkyo TX-NR5100 is a 7.2-channel 8K AV receiver rated at 165 W per channel (6 ohms) and 80 W per channel (8 ohms, FTC), with four HDMI 2.1 inputs all supporting 8K/60 and 4K/120, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding for 5.1.2 immersive layouts, AccuEQ room calibration, and a full streaming suite including AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, DTS Play-Fi, and Works with Sonos. It is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada.

How does the Onkyo TX-NR5100 compare to the Denon AVR-X1800H or Yamaha RX-V4A?

The TX-NR5100 holds clear advantages over the Denon AVR-X1800H and Yamaha RX-V4A in HDMI capability and gaming readiness. Its four HDMI 2.1 inputs all support 8K/60 and 4K/120 with the full suite of VRR, ALLM, and QFT features, whereas the Denon X1800H provides only two HDMI 2.1 inputs and the Yamaha RX-V4A includes only one. Works with Sonos integration and bidirectional Bluetooth with aptX HD headphone transmission are also differentiators that neither the X1800H nor the RX-V4A offers at this tier. The TX-NR5100's VLSC noise reduction circuitry and wide 10 Hz to 100 kHz frequency response in Direct mode further reflect Onkyo's emphasis on clean signal delivery.

Can the Onkyo TX-NR5100 support a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos layout?

Yes, the TX-NR5100 fully supports a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos speaker layout, combining five listener-level speakers, one or two subwoofers, and two overhead or height speakers for a three-dimensional immersive sound field. For rooms where ceiling or height speaker installation is not practical, the built-in Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer and DTS Virtual:X processing simulate overhead effects from a standard 5.1 or 7.1 configuration without additional speakers.

What is the difference between the TX-NR5100 and the TX-NR6100?

The TX-NR6100 steps above the TX-NR5100 in several areas. It adds a dedicated phono MM input for turntable connection, a powered Zone 2 speaker output for independent second-room amplification, a dedicated Zone 2 HDMI output, two additional HDMI inputs (six versus four), and a higher power rating of 210 W per channel versus 165 W per channel. The NR6100 also uses a more advanced DAC implementation and includes AccuReflex phase correction for Atmos-enabled up-firing speakers, plus the option to upgrade to Dirac Live room correction. The TX-NR5100 is the better value choice for straightforward 5.1.2 home theater builds where the additional zone and connectivity of the NR6100 are not required.

Does the Onkyo TX-NR5100 support hi-res audio and DSD playback?

Yes, the TX-NR5100 supports hi-res audio playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz in FLAC, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF formats via USB or network streaming, and also plays DSD files at DSD64, DSD128, and DSD256 from USB storage or a networked media server. SACD playback at 2.8 MHz two-channel and multichannel is supported via HDMI from a compatible source player, making the TX-NR5100 well suited for high-resolution music listening alongside its home theater capabilities.

What streaming services are built into the TX-NR5100?

The TX-NR5100 has AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, DTS Play-Fi, Roon Tested certification, Spotify Connect, Amazon Music HD (via DTS Play-Fi), Tidal Connect, Deezer, TuneIn, and Pandora built in. Works with Sonos compatibility with Volume Pass-Through allows the receiver to integrate into a Sonos wireless multiroom network. Voice control via Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri is supported with a compatible third-party smart speaker.

Where can I buy the Onkyo TX-NR5100 in Toronto or Canada?

The Onkyo TX-NR5100 is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised Onkyo dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound stocks the complete Onkyo TX-NR Series lineup and offers expert guidance on system setup, speaker pairing, AccuEQ calibration, and streaming configuration to help you get the best performance from your home theater.

A Jolly Ball - A Treat Ball!
Color: Red + Yellow
In the past, I got my girls a doggie jolly ball. They played with that thing until they tore it apart! I've also gotten them several different, but similar, treat balls over the years. Fast forward to present! I found the best of both worlds! A Jolly Treat Ball! Upon receiving these two balls, first, I was so glad to find that they didn't stink! Literally, no terrible smell! YAY! Second, the jolly treat balls are durable. I placed a large treat in each of the balls and handed them over. Each girl took the ball by the handle and pranced to their desired location to devour their treat! Devour, they did... NOT! Because of the durability and construction of these balls, it took them a good 5 minutes to fully get each morsel of their large cookie! YAY! Once emptied, I asked them to bring it. They each picked up their ball, by the handle and brought it to me. Too cute - they each got just one more treat! Now that they've utilized their jolly treat ball I have yet to see a single tooth mark in the ball. It has withstood their chewing to release the treat and hasn't been marred or scarred by their strong teeth. I've also had the opportunity; after each use, to wash the jolly treat balls. They even withstand a scrubby to get them cleaned! If I could, this "Durable Dog Chew Ball Toy" would get 10 stars! I'm one happy dog momma!
