What is Potassium Iodide (KI)?
Potassium iodide (also known as KI) is a stable, non-radioactive mineral salt. Stable iodine is an essential micronutrient required by the human body to manufacture vital thyroid hormones that control baseline metabolism. While most stable iodine is typically sourced from daily food intake, pure KI provides this essential element in a highly concentrated, reliable, and standardized form.
What does KI do?
Pure Potassium Iodide provides essential structural support to block the uptake of environmental impurities and safeguard the thyroid gland during unexpected radiological events.
The thyroid gland naturally absorbs various halides, including environmental iodine isotopes, bromine, and fluoride, which can lower its operational efficiency. Saturating the gland with premium, stable iodine creates a protective barrier that occupies cellular receptors, keeping the thyroid fully saturated and functioning properly.
This stable Potassium Iodide crystalline salt is highly stable and safe to store for many years in an emergency preparedness kit for long-term peace of mind.
What KI CanNOT Do
It is equally important to understand the specific functional limits of this mineral. Potassium Iodide cannot prevent environmental impurities from entering the physical body. It provides targeted protection exclusively for the thyroid gland, rather than offering full-body protection.
Additionally, it cannot reverse cellular or structural changes once localized tissue damage has already occurred.
Finally, Potassium Iodide offers no defense against other types of environmental elements, meaning that if specific iodine isotopes are not present, taking KI provides no protective benefit.
How does KI work?
The thyroid gland absorbs stable and radioactive iodine indiscriminately. Potassium Iodide works by physically blocking environmental impurities from entering this tissue. When you ingest KI, your thyroid absorbs the stable mineral first. Because pure KI supplies a highly concentrated amount of stable iodine, the gland becomes fully saturated, preventing the absorption of additional iodine for the next 24 hours.
Standard iodized table salt also contains iodine, providing a sufficient amount to maintain baseline health under normal daily conditions. However, table salt does not contain a high enough mineral concentration to block environmental impurities (like from unexpected radiological events) from entering your thyroid gland. For this reason, you should never use common table salt as a substitute for pure KI.
How well does KI work?
It is important to know that KI may not provide 100% full-spectrum protection against environmental impurities (like from unexpected radiological events). The overall efficiency of Potassium Iodide in successfully blocking external elements depends entirely on three critical factors:
- How much time passes between contamination with radioactive iodine and the taking of KI (the sooner a person takes KI, the better)
- How fast KI is absorbed into the blood
- The total amount of radioactive iodine to which a person is exposed.
Who should take KI?
The thyroid glands of a fetus, infants, young children, and individuals with low baseline stores of natural iodine are the most sensitive to environmental impurities (like from unexpected radiological events) and external tissue injury.
Infants (Including Breast-Fed Infants): Infants must receive the specific recommended pediatric dosage of KI. The amount of stable iodine that naturally passes into breast milk is insufficient to protect a nursing child from environmental exposure. Administering the proper independent dose directly to a nursing infant helps protect their developing thyroid from airborne or consumed impurities.
Children: The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that all children with confirmed or suspected internal contamination from environmental impurities take KI, provided they have no known iodine allergies. Individuals from newborn to 18 years of age exhibit the highest sensitivity to the harmful effects of external elements.
Young Adults: The FDA recommends that young adults between 18 and 40 years of age with confirmed or suspected internal contamination take the standard recommended adult dose of KI. Young adults exhibit lower overall tissue sensitivity to environmental impurities compared to children.
Pregnant Women: Because stable minerals naturally cross the placenta, pregnant women should take KI to protect the developing fetus. However, pregnant women should limit intake to only one single dose of KI following confirmed or suspected internal contamination from environmental impurities.
Breastfeeding Women: Women who are nursing should take only one single dose of KI if they experience confirmed or suspected internal contamination. Because environmental impurities pass rapidly into breast milk, the CDC recommends stopping breastfeeding to utilize clean baby formula or alternative food when available. If breast milk is the only food source available for the infant, nursing should continue.
Adults: Adults older than 40 years should not take KI unless public health or emergency management officials explicitly state that an exceptionally large dose of environmental impurity is expected. Individuals over 40 have the lowest statistical probability of developing thyroid tissue issues after exposure, and they carry a higher baseline potential for experiencing adverse sensitivities to concentrated mineral salts.
When should I take KI?
Following a radiological or nuclear event, local public health or emergency management officials will explicitly notify the public if KI or other protective protocols are required.
For example, authorities may advise you to shelter in place inside your home, school, or workplace, or to evacuate the area entirely. You may also be instructed to avoid consuming specific local foods and beverages until a safe supply is transported into the affected zone.
Strictly following the real-time instructions provided by these officials effectively lowers the volume of environmental impurities that enter your body and minimizes the risk of tissue injury to your thyroid gland.
How much KI should I take?
The FDA has approved two different forms of KI tablets and liquid that people can take by mouth after a nuclear radiation emergency. The less than saturated Potassium Iodide solution made with Health and Wisdom Potassium Iodide contains 130mg/5ml (1 teaspoon) which equals one adult dose.
According to the FDA, the following doses are appropriate to take after internal contamination with (or likely internal contamination with) radioactive iodine:
- Adults should take 130 mg (five mL - 1 teaspoon - of less than saturated solution).
- Women who are breast feeding should take the adult dose of 130 mg (five mL - 1 teaspoon - of less than saturated solution).
- Children between 3 and 18 years of age should take 65 mg (2.5 mL - 1/2 teaspoon - of less than saturated solution). Children who are adult size (greater than or equal to 150 pounds) should take the full adult dose, regardless of their age.
- Infants and children between 1 month and 3 years of age should take 32 mg (1.25 mL - 1/4 teaspoon - of less than saturated solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing infants and children.
- Newborns from birth to 1 month of age should be given 16 mg (.63 mL - 1/8 teaspoon - of less than saturated solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing newborn infants.
Less than saturated Potassium Iodide (KI) solutions, when properly mixed, should give even more accurate dosages because there is more solution overall to be measured out per dose. For example, mixing and dissolving exactly 26 grams of Potassium Iodide USP into a one liter bottle of water produces 1000 ml of Potassium Iodide solution with a strength of 130mg for each 5ml (1 teaspoon) of that Potassium Iodide (KI) solution. There are 200 of those 5ml servings in that 1000ml (1 liter). Five ml can be easily and accurately measured out with a common graduated medicine dropper or one teaspoon.
How often should I take KI?
A single dose of KI protects the thyroid gland for 24 hours. A one-time dose at the levels recommended above is usually all that is needed to protect the thyroid gland.
In some cases, radioactive iodine might be in the environment for more than 24 hours. If that happens, local emergency management or public health officials may tell you to take one dose of KI every 24 hours for a few days. You should do this only on the advice of emergency management officials, public health officials, or your doctor. Avoid repeat dosing with KI for pregnant and breastfeeding women and newborn infants. Those individuals may need to be evacuated until levels of radioactive iodine in the environment fall.
Taking a higher dose of KI, or taking KI more often than recommended, does not offer more protection and can cause severe illness or death.
You should NOT take KI if:
You know you are allergic to iodine. If you are unsure about this, consult your doctor. A seafood or shellfish allergy does not necessarily mean that you are allergic to iodine.
If you have certain skin disorders (such as dermatitis herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis.
People with thyroid disease may be treated with KI. This should happen under careful supervision of a doctor, especially if dosing lasts for more than a few days.
In all cases, talk to your doctor if you are not sure whether to take KI.
What are the possible risks and side effects of KI?
When public health or emergency management officials tell the public to take KI following a radiologic or nuclear event, the benefits of taking this drug outweigh the risks. This is true for all age groups.
Some general side effects caused by KI may include intestinal upset, allergic reactions (possibly severe), rashes, and inflammation of the salivary glands.
When taken as recommended, KI causes only rare adverse health effects that specifically involve the thyroid gland. In general, you are more likely to have an adverse health effect involving the thyroid gland if you:
- Take a higher than recommended dose of KI
- Take the drug for several days
- Have pre-existing thyroid disease.
Newborn infants (less than 1 month old) who receive more than one dose of KI are at particular risk for developing a condition known as hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone levels that are too low). If not treated, hypothyroidism can cause brain damage. Infants who receive KI should have their thyroid hormone levels checked and monitored by a doctor. Avoid repeat dosing of KI to newborns.
Ingredients

Instructions
Directions for Use
Add 1 level tablespoon (26 grams) of Potassium Iodide to one liter (34 oz) of water. Shake to mix until dissolved.
Each liter yields 200 of 5 ml servings. This produces 1000 ml of Potassium Iodide less than saturated solution with a strength of 130 mg of Iodine for each 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of Potassium Iodide solution, the recommended daily serving for emergency use in case of a nuclear accident that releases radioactive iodine into the air.
When this happens you have the greatest danger in the first day of the exposure. Radioactive iodine has the half-life of 8 days - 50% of it will decay by the 8th day. Your thyroid is always looking for iodine, and will pull in the toxic material, unless it is already saturated.
The jars are BPA-free, white heavy wall polypropylene. Potassium Iodide is stable. If unopened and kept dry, the shelf life is at least 7 years.
Recommended Use
Essential for emergency kits during radiological events, provides thyroid protection, supports detoxification, metabolism, cellular tissue renewal and balanced nervous system. Deeply clarifying topical actions.
